Baby Crib Hardware

You can build your own baby crib using the proper Baby Crib Hardware.  Obviously, the most important thing is safety.  Here are two things you need to concentrate on when choosing your baby crib hardware, and then in your construction of your homemade baby crib.

WOOD

In choosing hardware for a baby crib, you will have the option of choosing a soft or hard wood. Generally, hardwood will cost more than soft woods. If you can afford it, mahogany is a great choice and pleasing on the eye.  Soft woods may not be a great choice due to its inability to withstand your infant’s increasing weight and ever increasing playful activities.

FINISHING

The most important aspect is applying enough finishing to a newly built crib. The finishing will smooth out the surfaces, seal the wood, and bind the fibers well. This way, safety for your baby is ensured and splintering can be prevented.

The nice thing is that all finishing is non-toxic once it’s cured. However, be aware that all babies chew on just about anything, especially when beginning teething. That’s why when it comes to finishing we recommend shellac. It is very safe and is sometimes even used on confectioners coating on candy

* Only use wood slats that are no more than 2 inches apart.
* Make sure there are no rough edges and add extra padding on the corners for extra protection.
* Your rail height should be at least 26 inches high. If the height of the rail is less than three-fourths of a baby’s height, it is no longer safe for the baby.
